New equipment is hardly worth it...the characters don't even change with their equipment, so that alone isn't worth it.
Also, as for FFXI, think of FFXII, but with a better battle system, your allies actually know what they're doing and can think on par with you, and you can coordinate your team together easily. And when you get bored, you can sit and talk to them while you heal up, instead of running around in circles like an idiot.
